Indications
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in adults
- Acute maxillary sinusitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Pharyngitis or tonsillitis
- Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Acute otitis media in pediatric patients
- Treatment and prophylaxis of disseminated mycobacterial infections

Pharmacology
- Inhibition of microsomal protein synthesis
- Binding to the donor site on the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome
- Prevention of translocation at the donor site
- Activity against most Gram-positive bacteria, Chlamydia, some Gram-negative bacteria, and Mycoplasmas
- Twice the activity of Erythromycin against H. influenzae
- More acid-stable than Erythromycin
- Resistance of most species of Gram-negative bacteria to Clarithromycin

Interaction
- Contraindication with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, gastroprokinetic agents, ergot alkaloids, antipsychotics, and anti-gout agents
- Not recommended to use with antiarrhythmics drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clarithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide antibacterial drugs
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of clarithromycin

- Discontinuation in case of signs and symptoms of hepatitis
- Increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with coronary artery disease
