Indications
- Relief of inflammatory manifestations
- Hyperkeratotic dermatoses
- Dry corticosteroid responsive dermatoses

- Ichthyosis vulgaris

Pharmacology
- Clobetasol Propionate - high potency corticosteroid
- Stabilizes leukocyte lysosomal membranes
- Inhibits macrophage accumulation
- Reduces capillary wall permeability
- Salicylic acid - potent keratolytic action
- Softens and destroys the stratum corneum
- Increases endogenous hydration
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: apply thin layer twice daily
- Rub in gently & completely
- Adequate maintenance therapy for some patients
- Discontinue therapy when control achieved
- No improvement within 2 weeks requires reassessment
- Not to be used with occlusive dressing
- Treatment beyond 2 consecutive weeks not exceeding 50gm/week
- Not recommended for children under 12 years
Interaction
- No reported interaction with Clobetasol Propionate ointment and cream
- Topical salicylic acid may increase absorption of other topically applied medicines
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Clobetasol Propionate
- Primary infected bacterial or fungal skin lesions
- Primary cutaneous viral infections
- Tuberculous skin lesions
- Dermatoses in children under one year of age
- Salicylate hyersensitivity
Side Effects
- Prolonged use can result in systemic absorption
- Local atrophy after prolonged treatment
- Signs of hypersensitivity require immediate cessation of application
- Possible sensitivity reactions, drying, and irritation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Topical administration to pregnant animals can cause fetal abnormalities
- Safe use during lactation not established
- Use during pregnancy or lactation should be considered with caution
- No known contraindications to the use of Salicylic Acid ointment
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution on lesions close to the eye
- Extensive use over prolonged periods may lead to systemic absorption
- Hazardous in psoriasis, necessitating careful supervision
- Appropriate antimicrobial therapy required for treating inflammatory lesions
Overdose Effects
- Acute overdosage unlikely
- Features of hypercortisolism may appear with chronic overdosage
- Topical steroids should be discontinued gradually in case of chronic overdosage
