Indications

Pharmacology

  • Anticonvulsive effects

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual initial dose for adults with seizure disorders: 1.5 mg/day divided into three doses
  • Usual initial dose for adults with panic disorder: 0.25 mg given in two divided doses
  • Usual initial dose for pediatric patients: 0.01-0.03 mg/kg/day up to 0.05 mg/kg/day

Interactions

  • No significant alteration of phenytoin, carbamazepine, or phenobarbital pharmacokinetics

Contraindications

  • History of hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines
  • Clinical or biochemical evidence of significant liver disease
  • Acute narrow angle glaucoma

Precautions & Warnings

  • Increased incidence of generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients with multiple seizure disorders
  • Concomitant use with valproic acid may produce absence status

Use in Special Populations

  • Increased production of saliva and bronchial secretion in infants and small children
  • Greater pharmacologic effects in elderly patients
  • No dose adjustment required in patients with renal impairment
  • Reduced clearance in liver cirrhosis
