Medicine Details

Triazole analog of the 1,4-benzodiazepine class of drugs
Anxiolytic with hypnotic and anticonvulsive properties
Interacts with Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)-benzodiazepine receptor complex
Produces dose-related CNS depressant activity
Initiated with a dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg three times daily
Maximum dose should not exceed 4 mg/day
Occasional patients with panic disorder may need as much as 10 mg a day
Individualized dosage for maximum beneficial effect with the lowest possible dose
Discontinuation requires gradual dosage reduction
Starting dose for elderly patients or those with advanced liver disease is 0.25 mg
Interacts with other psychotropic drugs, anticonvulsants, antihistaminics, alcohol, and oral contraceptives
Side effects include drowsiness, light-headedness, depression, headache, confusion, dry mouth, constipation, etc.
Categorized as pregnancy category D
Assumed to be excreted in breast milk
May produce psychological and physical dependence
Caution required in patients with hepatic or renal disease, chronic pulmonary insufficiency, or sleep apnea
Safety and effectiveness not established in individuals below 18 years of age
Manifestations of overdosage include somnolence, confusion, impaired coordination, diminished reflexes, and coma
Belongs to the therapeutic class of Benzodiazepine sedatives
