Pharmacology
Provides anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting Phospholipase A2 enzyme and decreases the release of certain chemicals in the immune system
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: For acute disorders: Up to 120 mg/day initially, Maintenance doses in most conditions are within the range of 3-18 mg/day
- Rheumatoid arthritis: Maintenance dose is usually within the range of 3-18 mg/day
- Bronchial asthma: High doses of 48-72 mg/day may be needed for acute attack, Maintenance doses should be titrated to the lowest effective dose
- Children: Doses usually lie in the range 0.25-1.5 mg/kg/day
- Deflazacort withdrawal should not be abrupt
Interaction
Metabolized in the liver, maintenance dose may need adjustment when co-administered with liver enzyme inducers or inhibitors
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, Patients receiving live virus immunization

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Corticosteroids may increase the risk of intrauterine growth retardation, should be prescribed only when benefits outweigh risks
- Nursing Mother: Doses of up to 50 mg daily unlikely to cause systemic effects in the infant, higher doses may lead to adrenal suppression in the infant

Use in Special Populations
- Hepatic Impairment: Blood levels may be increased, dose should be carefully monitored and adjusted to the minimum effective dose
- Renal Impairment: No special precautions necessary
- Elderly: No special precautions necessary, common adverse effects may have more serious consequences in old age
