Indications
- Anaphylaxis, asthma, severe hypersensitivity reactions
- Rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile chronic arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica
- Systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, mixed connective tissue disease
- Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
- Acute and lymphatic leukaemia, malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma
Pharmacology
- Provides anti-inflammatory action
- Inhibits Phospholipase A2 enzyme
- Decreases release of certain chemicals in the immune system
- Immunosuppressive action
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: Up to 120 mg/day for acute disorders
- Maintenance doses in most conditions are within the range of 3-18 mg/day
- Children: Doses usually lie in the range of 0.25-1.5 mg/kg/day
- Alternate day administration may be appropriate
- Dosage depends on clinical need
- Deflazacort withdrawal should not be abrupt
Interaction
- Metabolized in the liver
- Recommended to increase maintenance dose if liver enzyme inducers are co-administered
- Possible to reduce maintenance dose for drugs which inhibit liver enzymes
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Patients receiving live virus immunization

- Ophthalmic effects
- Fluid and electrolyte disturbances
- Susceptibility to infection
- Impaired healing
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, acne
- Myocardial rupture following recent MI
- Thromboembolism
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Corticosteroids may increase the risk of intrauterine growth retardation
- Prescribed when benefits outweigh risks
- Excreted in breast milk
- Higher doses may cause adrenal suppression in infants
Precautions & Warnings
- Cardiac disease or congestive heart failure
- Hypertension, thromboembolic disorders
- Dietary salt restriction and potassium supplementation may be necessary
- Gastritis or esophagitis, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis
- Diabetes mellitus or family history, osteoporosis, myasthenia gravis, renal insufficiency
- Emotional instability or psychotic tendency, epilepsy
- Liver failure, hypothyroidism and cirrhosis
- Ocular herpes simplex
Use in Special Populations
- Hepatic Impairment: Dose should be carefully monitored and adjusted
- Renal Impairment: No special precautions necessary
- Elderly: Common adverse effects may be associated with more serious consequences
