Indications
- Chronic dry cough
- Unproductive cough
- Acute dry cough interfering with normal function or sleep
Composition
- Each 5 ml sugar-free syrup contains Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide BP 10 mg
Pharmacology
- Cough suppressant with central action on the cough center in the medulla
- Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract
- Exerts effects in 15-30 minutes after oral administration
- Duration of action is 3-6 hours with conventional dosage form
- Extensively metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine
- No analgesic properties and little sedative activity
- Addiction has not been observed after administration of large doses for prolonged period
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and Children over 12 years: 15 to 30 mg three to four times per day
- Children 6-12 years: 5-15 mg up to four times per day
- Children 2-6 years: 2.5-5 mg up to four times per day
Interaction
- Two fatal interactions reported in patients taking therapeutic doses of phenelzine and dextromethorphan
Contraindications
- Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors contraindicated with Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide
- Prescribed with caution to patients with liver disease
Side Effects
- Rare adverse effects, with nausea and dizziness sometimes occurring
- No analgesia or addiction, little or no CNS depression
- Potential for excitation, confusion, and respiratory depression after overdosage
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in first three months of pregnancy
- Nursing mothers advised not to take the drug due to lack of information on secretion into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use with cough associated with smoking, asthma, or emphysema
- Not for use with productive cough
