Indications
- Treatment of carbohydrate and fluid depletions
- Replacement of water deficiency
- Treatment of low blood sugar
- Management of hyperkalaemia
- Emergency management of hyperglycaemia
- Suitable vehicle for the slow intravenous infusion of numerous drugs
Pharmacology
- Dextrose as a form of glucose
- IV administration to replace lost fluids and provide carbohydrates
- Treatment of insulin shock and dehydration
- Given for nutritional support to patients unable to eat
Dosage
- Variable dose dependent on patient requirements
- Maximum rate of infusion without causing glycosuria
- Rate of glucose utilization
- Oral powder dosage for adults and children
Administration
- Check infusion set and solution prior to use
- Inserting the spike of the administration set to the Eurocap
- Cleaning the venpuncture site with antiseptic solution
- Starting infusion while adjusting drip speed
Contraindications
- Allergy to dextrose
- Diabetes
- Breathing problems
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Kidney or liver disease
- Food or drug allergy
- Regular blood transfusions
Side Effects
- Burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle
- Warmth, redness, or bleeding at the IV site
- High blood sugar, headache, weakness, fainting
- Low potassium or anxiety, severe shortness of breath, fast heart rate
Pregnancy & Lactation
- FDA pregnancy category C
- Unknown effect on unborn baby and nursing baby
- Consult doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Careful monitoring of serum glucose concentration
- Concurrent use of insulin for diabetic patients
- Discontinuation of infusion if rigor arises
- Storage conditions below 30°C, away from light & moisture
