Description
- Infudex Dextrose 5% Solution is administered in the treatment of carbohydrate and fluid depletions. It is mainly used to replace water deficiency and should be given alone when there is no significant loss of electrolytes. Water depletion (dehydration) tends to occur when these losses are not matched by a comparable intake. Infudex also may act as a suitable vehicle for the slow intravenous infusion of numerous drugs.

Pharmacology
- Dextrose is a form of glucose (sugar)
- Injected into a vein through an IV to replace lost fluids and provide carbohydrates to the body
- Used to treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), insulin shock, or dehydration (fluid loss)
- Given for nutritional support to patients unable to eat due to illness, injury, or medical condition
Dosage
- Variable dosing dependent on individual patient requirements
- Dose frequently ranges from 500 to 1000 ml for 5% dextrose solution
- Maximum rate of infusion without causing glycosuria

Administration
- Check infusion set and solution prior to use
- Insert spike of administration set into Eurocap
- Clean venpuncture site with antiseptic solution before needle insertion
- Adjust drip speed during infusion
Contraindications
- Allergy to dextrose
- Presence of diabetes, breathing problems, electrolyte imbalance, kidney or liver disease, food or drug allergy, or regular blood transfusions
Side Effects
- Severe burning, pain, or swelling around IV needle
- Warmth, redness, oozing, or bleeding at IV site
- Fever, ongoing cough
- High blood sugar, headache, trouble concentrating, memory problems, weakness, feeling unsteady, hallucinations, fainting, seizure, shallow or stopping breathing, low potassium, anxiety, sweating, pale skin, severe shortness of breath, wheezing, pain, fast or uneven heart rate

- Unknown effect on unborn baby and nursing baby
- Consult doctor if pregnant or planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Careful monitoring of serum glucose concentration
- Concurrent use of insulin may be needed for diabetic patients
- Infusion should be discontinued if rigor arises for any reasons
- Avoid use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or after expiry date
- Special care required if allergic to Infudex
