Dosage & Administration
- Dosage depends on severity of condition
- Adult oral dosages vary from 1 mg to 10 mg
- Children oral dosages vary from 0.03-0.20 mg/kg body weight
- Higher dosages may be temporarily required in some patients
- For short dexamethasone suppression test
- Intravenous, intramuscular, or local injection administration
- Dosage for systemic therapy in adults
- Recommended doses for local therapy
Interaction
- Enhanced potassium loss with diuretics and/or cardiac glycosides
- Impaired glucose tolerance with antidiabetics
- Increased gastro-intestinal ulceration risk with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Altered need for oral anti-coagulants with glucocorticoids
- Effectiveness may reduce when used with liver enzyme inducing drugs
- Caution required when reduction in dosage with salicylates
- Impaired gastro-intestinal absorption with antacids
Contraindications
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Systemic and ophthalmic fungal infections
- Viral infections
- Glaucoma
- Hypersensitivity to corticosteroids
