Pharmacology
Decreases inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte migration and reversing capillary permeability, suppresses normal immune response
Dosage & Administration
- Oral dosages for adults vary from 1 mg to 10 mg
- Oral dosages for children vary from 0.03-0.20 mg/kg body weight
- Higher dosages may be temporarily required in some patients
- Intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) or local injection administration
- Systemic therapy in adults requires daily doses of 0.05-0.20 mg/kg body weight
- Local therapy doses vary for different applications
Interaction
- Diuretics and/or cardiac glycosides
- Antidiabetics
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Oral anticoagulants
- Liver enzyme inducing drugs
- Salicylates
- Antacids
Contraindications
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Systemic and ophthalmic fungal infections
- Viral infections
- Glaucoma
- Hypersensitivity to corticosteroids

Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C, corticosteroids appear in breast milk, caution advised for breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use lowest possible dose
- Caution in patients with congestive heart failure, hypertension, or renal insufficiency
- Minimize drug-induced secondary adrenocortical insufficiency
- Use with caution in peptic ulcers, diverticulitis, and ulcerative colitis
- Consideration needed for patients at risk of osteoporosis
Use in Special Populations
Pediatric patients should be titrated to the lowest effective dose to minimize potential growth effects
Overdose Effects
Overdosage is unlikely, supportive and symptomatic therapy required
Storage Conditions
- Tablet: Store in a cool & dry place, protected from light & moisture
- Injection: Store below 30°C, protected from light, do not freeze, keep out of the reach of children
