Indications
- Prophylaxis and treatment of chronic stable and vasopastic angina pectoris
- Management of hypertension
- Treatment of myocardial infarction, coronary artery spasm, arrhythmias, Raynaud's phenomenon, oesophageal motility disorder, and migraine
Pharmacology
- Calcium channel antagonist
- Peripheral and coronary vasodilator with negative inotropic activity
- Inhibits cardiac conduction at the sino-atrial and atrioventricular nodes
- Actions: Antianginal, Antiarrhythmic, Antihypertensive
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dose of 60 mg thrice daily for film-coated tablets
- Initial dose of 90 mg or 120 mg twice daily for sustained release formulation
Interaction
- Concomitant prophylactic therapy with short- or long-acting nitrates may be administered safely during diltiazem therapy
- Caution and careful dosage titration when diltiazem is administered concomitantly with other drugs affecting cardiac contractility or conduction
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Sick sinus syndrome
- Second or third degree AV block
- Severe hypertension
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Radiographically documented pulmonary congestion

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and controlled studies in pregnant women
- Diltiazem is distributed into milk
- Alternative method of infant feeding recommended for nursing women receiving diltiazem
