Indications

Pharmacology

  • Therapeutic class: haematinic
  • Brown, sterile, aqueous complex of Polynuclear Iron (III) Hydroxide in Sucrose
  • Contains approximately 30% Sucrose w/v
  • pH of 10.5-11.1
  • Dissociates into Iron and Sucrose
  • Iron transfers to liver and bone marrow
  • Iron binds to plasma transferrin
  • Elimination half-life of 6 hours

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 5-10 ml Iron Sucrose Injection
  • Children dosage: Limited data available
  • Frequency: once to three times a week
  • Dependent on hemoglobin level

Administration

  • Intravenous injection
  • Maximum 10 ml Iron Sucrose Injection per injection
  • Test dose before administration
  • Slow intravenous injection recommended
  • Infusion with 0.9% w/v Sodium Chloride solution

Interaction

  • Not studied for drug interactions
  • Not to be administered concomitantly with oral iron preparations

Contraindications

  • Iron overload
  • Known hypersensitivity to Iron Sucrose
  • Anemia not caused by Iron deficiency
  • History of allergic disorders, liver disease, infections

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to accumulation of Iron in storage sites
  • Monitoring of Iron parameters recommended
  • Symptoms include hypotension, headache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness
