Description

  • Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) with 165 amino acid sequence
  • Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
  • Molecular weight approximately 30,400 daltons

Indications

  • Treatment of anemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
  • Treatment of anemia in Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
  • Treatment of anemia in patients undergoing myelosuppressive chemotherapy
  • Reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in patients undergoing elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery
  • Prevention of anemia of prematurity in infants with low birth weight and gestational age

Dosage

  • Evaluate iron status before and during treatment
  • Monitor hemoglobin levels at least weekly until stable, then monthly
  • Consider hemoglobin rate of rise, rate of decline, and ESA responsiveness
  • Starting dose and dose adjustments for CKD patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
  • Starting dose and dose adjustments for Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
  • Starting dose and dose adjustments for patients on cancer chemotherapy
  • Administration via intravenous or subcutaneous route

Administration

  • Do not shake or freeze the product
  • Protect the syringe from light
  • Inspect visually for particulate matter and discoloration
  • Discard unused portions

Interaction

  • Simultaneous therapeutic administration with a haematinic agent may potentiate the effect

Contraindications

  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
  • Patients who develop Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin

Side Effects

  • Adverse reactions in CKD patients
  • Adverse reactions in Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
  • Adverse reactions in cancer patients on chemotherapy
  • Adverse reactions in surgery patients
  • Common adverse reaction in premature infants

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Reproduction toxicology shown in animal studies
  • Use in pregnancy only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to the foetus
  • Not recommended for pregnant or lactating surgical patients participating in autologous blood predonation

Overdose Effects

  • Wide therapeutic margin
  • Hemoglobin levels may rise above desired level
  • Manage with discontinuation or reduction of dosage, and/or with phlebotomy
  • Cases of severe hypertension observed following overdose with ESAs
