Indications

Description
- Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO)
- Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
- 165 amino acid sequence identical to human urinary EPO
- Apparent molecular weight of about 30,400 daltons
Dosage
- Evaluation of iron stores and nutritional factors
- Monitoring hemoglobin levels during therapy
- Dosing adjustments based on hemoglobin response
- Different starting doses for CKD patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
- Dose adjustment for Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients
- Initiation of Erythropoietin alfa in cancer patients based on hemoglobin level
Administration
- Preparation and administration instructions

Interaction
- Effect potentiation by simultaneous administration of haematinic agent like ferrous sulphate
Contraindications
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
- Patients who develop Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin
Side Effects
- Adverse reactions in CKD patients, Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients, Cancer Patients, Surgery Patients, and Premature infants
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use of Erythropoietin alfa in pregnancy in chronic renal failure patients
- Use of Erythropoietin alfa in pregnant or lactating surgical patients participating in an autologous blood predonation programme
- Excretion of Erythropoietin alfa in human milk and caution for nursing women
Overdose Effects
- Wide therapeutic margin
- Potential hemoglobin level increase
- Management with discontinuation or reduction of dosage and/or phlebotomy
- Cases of severe hypertension observed
