Description
- Etoricoxib is a COX-2 specific inhibitor
- Indicated for Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, and acute gouty arthritis
- Can be used for short-term treatment of moderate pain associated with dental surgery
- Selective COX-2 inhibition for symptomatic relief
- Not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Storage temperature below 30°C, protect from light and moisture
Dosage and Administration
- Recommended daily doses for different conditions
- 30 mg for Osteoarthritis, may increase to 60 mg if necessary
- 90 mg for Rheumatoid arthritis and Ankylosing spondylitis
- 120 mg for acute gouty arthritis, limited to 8 days
- 90 mg for postoperative dental surgery pain, maximum of 3 days
- Consider lowest effective dose due to increased cardiovascular risks
Pharmacology
- Potent COX-2 specific inhibitor within clinical dose range
- Decreases pain, inflammation, and fever with decreased potential for Gl toxicity and platelet aggregation
- Dose-dependent inhibition of COX-2
Interactions
- Interaction with oral anticoagulants leading to increased prothrombin time
- Potential effects on diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and angiotensin II antagonists
- Possible interaction with acetylsalicylic acid for cardiovascular prophylaxis
- Potential interaction with ciclosporin, tacrolimus, and lithium
- Suggested to be taken without regards to meals
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to active substance or excipients
- Active peptic ulceration or Gl bleeding
- Previous allergic-type reactions to NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors
- Severe hepatic dysfunction or estimated renal creatinine clearance <30 ml/min
- Not recommended for children and adolescents under 16 years of age
- Contraindicated in inflammatory bowel disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension
Side Effects
- Palpitation, fatigue, and influenza-like symptoms
- Potential effects on taste, appetite, chest pain, and mental acuity
- Rare occurrences of confusion and hallucinations
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in women attempting to conceive
- Not known whether excreted in human milk
- Excreted in the milk of lactating rats
