Indications
- Treatment of hyperlipidemias
- Specifically for hyperlipidemias of type lla, llb, III, IV & V
- For patients who have not responded adequately to diet & other appropriate measures
Pharmacology
- Fibric acid derivative
- Rapid hydrolysis to pharmacologically active form
- Reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-lipoprotein B, Total triglycerides and VLDL
- Increases in HDL and apo-proteins apoAI apoAII
- Reduction of serum uric acid levels
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 200mg per day for adult patients with hypercholesterolemia or mixed hyperlipidemia
- Initial dose of 67-200mg per day for adult patients with hypertriglyceridemia
- Individualized dosing according to patient response
- Administration with meal for optimal bioavailability
- As directed by the registered physician
Interaction
- Potentiate anticoagulant effects of warfarin
- Improved glucose tolerance and additive effect with antidiabetic drugs
- Increased nephrotoxicity of cyclosporine
- Cautions against use with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors
- Well tolerated with low-dose statins
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fenofibrate
- Severe renal or hepatic impairment
- Existing gall bladder disease
- Breast feeding mothers
- Photosensitivity to ketoprofen
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal issues like nausea and anorexia
- Pruritus and urticaria
- Impotence
- Headache, dizziness, vertigo, fatigue
- Hair loss
- Myotoxicity
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for pregnant women
Precautions & Warnings
- Special care needed in patients with renal disease
- Discontinuation in case of suspected myotoxicity or significant increase in creatinine kinase concentration
- Liver function tests recommended every 3 months for first year
Overdose Effects
- No specific treatment
- General supportive care including vital signs monitoring
- Hemodialysis should not be considered
