Indications
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C)
- Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) in adults
- Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC) in adult patients with chronic, non-cancer pain
Pharmacology
- Locally-acting chloride-channel activator
- Increases intestinal secretion
- Increases intestinal motility
- Aids in the passage of stool
- Relieves symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic constipation
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for IBS-C: 8 mcg twice daily orally with food and water
- Recommended dose for CIC and OIC: 24 mcg twice daily orally with food and water
- Dosage adjustment for hepatic impairment
- Starting dose for severely impaired hepatic function
Interaction
- Possibility of decrease in efficacy with diphenylheptane opioids
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction
