Indications
- Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy.
- Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy.
Pharmacology
- Iron is essential for haemoglobin formation
- Iron deficiency anaemia is often caused by chronic haemorrhage, nutritional deficiency, pregnancy, parasite infestation, or malabsorption of iron
- Deficiency of Folic acid during pregnancy can cause megaloblastic anaemia
- Folic acid and ferrous fumerate combination avoids complications of rapid red blood cell production
Dosage & Administration
- One tablet daily for adults
- In pregnancy, recommended to start at first antenatal consultation and continue for 3 months after delivery
- Preferably taken before meals, or after meals if there are gastrointestinal disturbances
Interaction
- Absorption of iron salts and tetracycline is diminished when taken concomitantly by mouth
- Iron salts absorption is decreased with antacids or when taken with tea
- Iron salts may reduce the effects of penicillamine
- Co-trimoxazole may inhibit megaloblastic haemopoiesis
- Administration of folate may reduce serum anticonvulsant levels
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in pernicious anaemia and anaemia other than those due to iron deficiency
- Absorption inhibited by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacid containing carbonate
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Gastrointestinal symptoms
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
Precautions & Warnings
- Administration during the first trimester of pregnancy may be undesirable
- Investigate further if anaemia develops despite prophylaxis
- Care needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer
Overdose Effects
- Gastric lavage if possible within four hours of the overdosage
- Symptomatic treatment as necessary
- Chelating agent like desferrioxamine to eliminate excess free iron
