Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria

Pharmacology

  • H1 histamine receptor mediation
  • Blockage of histamine effects
  • No significant CNS effects

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years and older
  • Dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years and older
  • Instructions for children in various age groups

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Increased level of fexofenadine with erythromycin or ketoconazole coadministration
  • No interaction with omeprazole
  • Reduction in bioavailability when coadministered with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients

Side Effects

  • Headache, drowsiness, dizziness
  • Nausea, fatigue
  • Hypersensitivity reactions, tachycardia, diarrhea, rash, pruritus

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited data in pregnant women
  • Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
  • Warning for patients with cardiovascular disease
  • Unlikely to produce effect on the ability to drive or use machines
  • Recommendation to check individual response before driving or performing tasks

Use in Special Populations

  • Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
  • Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect pharmacokinetics
  • Similar adverse events in elderly patients

Overdose Effects

  • Reported effects of dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
  • No established maximum tolerated dose
  • Recommendation for symptomatic and supportive treatment
