Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Delfex binds to H1 receptors as an inverse agonist
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Unlikely to cause significant CNS effects as it does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage
- 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg/180 mg once daily for adults and children 12 years and older
- 30 mg twice daily or 60 mg once daily for children 6 to 11 years
- Suspension: 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily for children 2 to 11 years
Interaction
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole increases fexofenadine levels in plasma
- No interaction with omeprazole observed
- Antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide reduce bioavailability if administered 15 minutes prior to Delfex
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride
Side effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions, insomnia, tachycardia, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus in post-marketing surveillance
Pregnancy lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy unless clearly necessary
- Not recommended for mothers breastfeeding their babies
Precautions warnings
- Administer with care in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Warn patients with cardiovascular disease about potential adverse reactions like tachycardia and palpitations
- Unlikely to produce an effect on the ability to drive or use machines
Special populations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in renal-impaired individuals
- Increased bioavailability in individuals over 65 years of age
Overdose effects
- Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
- No clinically significant adverse reactions observed at doses up to 800 mg
