Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years and over
  • Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years and over

Pharmacology

  • Acts as an inverse agonist of the H1 receptor
  • Binds to and stabilizes the inactive form of the H1 receptor to prevent its activation and downstream effects
  • Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
  • Does not cross the blood-brain barrier

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults and children 12 years and older: Tablet: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
  • Children 2 to 11 years: Suspension: 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
  • In case of impaired renal function: Adjusted dosage based on age and condition

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole results in increased plasma levels
  • No interaction with omeprazole observed
  • Administration with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide gels reduces bioavailability

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients

Use in Special Populations

  • Pharmacokinetics altered in individuals with renal impairment
  • Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect the pharmacokinetics
  • Adverse events similar in elderly patients compared to younger patients

Overdose Effects

  • Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
  • Clinical trials with high doses demonstrated no significant adverse reactions
  • Standard measures for removal of unabsorbed product recommended
