Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years of age and older
  • Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years of age and older

Pharmacology

  • H1 histamine receptor mediating hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
  • Fexofenadine as an 'inverse agonist' of the H1 receptor
  • Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
  • No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
  • Does not cross the blood-brain barrier

Dosage & Administration

  • Allergic Rhinitis Adult:
    • 60 mg twice daily
    • 120 mg once daily
    • 180 mg once daily
  • Allergic Rhinitis Children 6-11 years:
    • 30 mg twice daily
    • 60 mg once daily
  • Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria Adult:
    • 60 mg twice daily
    • 120 mg once daily
    • 180 mg once daily

    • 30 mg twice daily

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole resulting in increased fexofenadine level
  • No interaction with omeprazole observed
  • Reduction in bioavailability when coadministered with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide
