Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years of age and over
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years of age and older
- Improves health-related quality of life and work/activity productivity
Pharmacology
- Works by blocking histamine responsible for mediating hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
- Prevents activation of H1 receptors and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60mg twice daily or 120mg once daily or 180mg once daily
- Children from 6 to 11 years: 30mg twice daily or 60mg once daily
- Children from 2 to 11 years: 30mg or 5ml suspension twice daily
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation, minimal interaction with other medicinal products through hepatic mechanisms
- 2-3 times increase in level of fexofenadine in plasma when coadministered with erythromycin or ketoconazole
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Frequency cannot be estimated: hypersensitivity reactions, tachycardia, palpitations, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended unless clearly necessary due to limited data
- Fexofenadine was found to cross into human breast milk when Terfenadine was administered to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with history of cardiovascular disease should be warned about possible adverse reactions
Use in Special Populations
- Recommendations for patients with decreased renal function and moderate to severe hepatic disease
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals over 65 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- No clinically significant adverse reactions at single doses up to 800 mg
