Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years of age and over
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years of age and older
- Improves health-related quality of life and work/activity productivity for allergic rhinitis
- Significantly reduces the signs and symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine is an 'inverse agonist' of the H1 receptor
- Selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
- Children from 2 to 11 years: Suspension - 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
- Instructions for dosage adjustment in case of impaired renal function
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole leads to increased level of fexofenadine in plasma
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole
- Reduction in bioavailability when coadministered with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue reported in clinical trials
- Post-marketing surveillance reports hypersensitivity reactions, tachycardia, palpitations, diarrhea, and skin disorders
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data on use during pregnancy
- Not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data for older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Warning for patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease
- Unlikely to produce an effect on the ability to drive or use machines
Use in Special Populations
- Instructions for dosage adjustment in renal impaired patients
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment and over 65 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
