Indications
- Prophylaxis of classic migraine
- Prophylaxis of common migraine
- Symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo
- Symptomatic treatment of motion sickness

Pharmacology
- Selective calcium channel antagonist
- Reduces excessive transmembrane influx of calcium
- Prevents cellular calcium overload
- Has antihistaminic properties
- Has sedative properties
- Binds at an affinity of 99% to plasma protein
Dosage and administration
- Starting dose for migraine prophylaxis: 10 mg at night for patients under 65 years, 5 mg daily for patients over 65 years
- Maintenance treatment for migraine prophylaxis
- Peripheral Vascular Disease dosage: 10 mg twice daily, up to 30 mg daily if required
- Vertigo and motion sickness dosage: 10-20 mg daily for adults, 5 mg daily for children (> 40 kg)
- Epileptic seizure dosage: 15-20 mg daily for adults, 5-10 mg daily for children as add-on therapy
Interaction
- Potential interaction with oral contraceptives leading to Galactorrhoea
- Interaction with Carbamazepine and Phenytoin increasing metabolism of Florium
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Flunarizine
- Contra-indicated in patients with history of depressive illness
- Contra-indicated in patients with pre-existing symptoms of Parkinson's disease or other extrapyramidal disorders
Side effects
- Drowsiness and/or fatigue
- Weight gain and/or increased appetite
- Adverse experiences during chronic treatment include depression, extrapyramidal symptoms
- Infrequently reported adverse reactions such as heartburn, nausea, insomnia, anxiety, galactorrhoea, dry mouth, muscle ache, and skin rash
Pregnancy and lactation
- Safety not established in pregnancy
- Safety not established in lactation
Precautions and warnings
- May lead to drowsiness aggravated by alcohol or other CNS depressants
- Caution against driving or hazardous tasks
- Not suited for aborting a migraine attack
- May give rise to extrapyramidal and depressive symptoms, reveal Parkinsonism, especially in predisposed patients such as the elderly
