Indications

Prophylaxis of Migraine:
- Classic Migraine (with aura)
- Common Migraine (without aura)
Vestibular Vertigo treatment: Symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo
Peripheral Vascular Disease treatment: Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD)
Motion Sickness treatment: Motion sickness
Epileptic seizure treatment: Refractory epilepsy resistant to conventional antiepileptic therapy

Pharmacology

Mode of Action: Selective calcium channel antagonist
Mechanism of action: Prevention of cellular calcium overload
Additional properties:
- Antihistaminic properties
- Sedative properties

Dosage & Administration

Migraine Prophylaxis:
- Starting Dose: 10 mg at night in patients less than 65 years of age, 5 mg daily in patients older than 65 years
- Maintenance Treatment: Decrease to 5 days treatment at the same daily dose with two successive medicine free days every week after satisfactory response
- Peripheral Vascular Disease: 10 mg twice daily, up to 30 mg per day if required
- Vertigo & motion sickness: 10-20 mg daily for adults, 5 mg daily for children (> 40 kg)
- Epileptic seizure: 15-20 mg daily in adults, 5 to 10 mg daily for children as add-on therapy

Interactions

Interactions with oral contraceptives: Galactorrhoea reported in few women
Hepatic enzyme inducers interaction: Carbamazepine and Phenytoin may increase metabolism, requiring possible dosage increase

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Flunarizine. Contra-indicated in patients with a history of depressive illness, or pre-existing symptoms of Parkinson's disease or other extrapyramidal disorders

Chronic treatment adverse effects:
- Depression
- Extrapyramidal symptoms (bradykinesia, rigidity, akathisia, orofacial dyskinesia, tremor)

- Heartburn
- Nausea
- Gastralgia
- Insomnia
- Anxiety
- Galactorrhoea
- Dry mouth
- Muscle ache
- Skin rash

Precautions & Warnings

Potential drowsiness: May lead to drowsiness aggravated by alcohol or other CNS depressants, caution against driving or hazardous tasks
Aborting a migraine attack: Not suited for aborting a migraine attack
Extrapyramidal and depressive symptoms: May give rise to extrapyramidal and depressive symptoms, reveal Parkinsonism, caution in predisposed patients
