Pharmacology
Flupentixol - a neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties; Melitracen - a bipolar thymoleptic with activating properties
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 2 tablets orally daily in the morning and noon; increased to 2 tablets in severe cases
- Elderly patients: 1 tablet in the morning
- Maintenance dose: 1 tablet orally in the morning; additional treatment with a sedative in the acute phase recommended for insomnia or severe restlessness
Interaction
May enhance the response to alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants. Simultaneous administration of MAO-inhibitors may cause hypertensive crises.
Contraindications
- Immediate recovery phase after myocardial infarction
- Defects in bundle-branch conduction
- Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
- Acute alcohol, barbiturate, and opiate intoxications
- Not recommended for excitable or overactive patients
- Patients who have received an MAO-inhibitor within two weeks
Side Effects
Rare in recommended doses; transient restlessness and insomnia
Pregnancy & Lactation
Preferably not given during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
Tranquilizers with sedative effect should be withdrawn gradually if previously treated
Overdose Effects
Symptoms dominated by intoxications of anticholinergic nature and extrapyramidal symptoms
