Indications
- Treatment of Folic Acid Acid deficiency
- Treatment of Megaloblastic anemia
- Treatment of Anemias of nutritional origins, pregnancy, infancy, or childhood
Pharmacology
- Biochemical conversion to tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate
- Maintenance of normal erythropoiesis
- Synthesis of purine and thymidylate nucleic acids
- Interconversion of amino acids
- Methylation of tRNA
- Generation and use of formate
Dosage & Administration
- Adults:
- Initially: 5 mg daily for 4 months
- Maintenance: 5 mg every 1-7 days depending on the underlying disease
- Children:
- Up to 1 year: 500 mcg/kg daily
- Over 1 year: Same as adult dose

Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with folate dependent tumors
- Not to be given alone or in conjunction with inadequate amounts of vitamin B12 for undiagnosed megaloblastic anemia
- Perform cobalamin absorption test in elderly before long term folate use
