Indications
- Folcid deficiency

- Anemias of nutritional origins, pregnancy, infancy, or childhood
Pharmacology
Folic acid is converted to tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate by dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), used in erythropoiesis, nucleic acids synthesis, amino acid interconversion, tRNA methylation, and homocysteine remethylation via methionine synthetase with vitamin B12 as a cofactor.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults:
- Initially: 5 mg daily for 4 months
- Maintenance: 5 mg every 1-7 days
- Children:
- Up to 1 year: 500 mcg/kg daily
- Over 1 year: Same as adult dose

Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in patients with folate dependent tumours, not to be given alone for undiagnosed megaloblastic anaemia, perform a cobalamin absorption test in elderly before long term use
