Description
- Exium 40 mg Capsule is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, and symptoms associated with excessive stomach acid.
Indications
- Relief from chronic heartburn symptoms
- Healing of erosive esophagitis
- Maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis
- Eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection
- Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- Management of acid related Dyspepsia
- Treatment of Duodenal & Gastric ulcers
Mode of Action
- Suppression of gastric acid secretion by inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase
- First single optical isomer of proton pump inhibitor
- Better acid control than racemic proton pump inhibitors
- Absorption peak plasma levels occur at approximately 1.5 hours after oral administration
Dosage Forms
- Oral capsules
- IV Injection or IV infusion
Dosage Instructions
- 20 mg or 40 mg Once Daily for 4-8 Weeks for healing of erosive esophagitis
- 20 mg Once Daily for maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis
- 20 mg Once Daily for symptomatic GERD for 4 Weeks
- 40 mg Once Daily for Helicobacter pylori eradication in combination therapy
- 20-80 mg Once Daily for Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- 20-40 mg Once Daily for acid-related Dyspepsia
- 20 mg Once Daily for Duodenal ulcer, 20-40 mg Once Daily for Gastric ulcer
- Dosage for IV Injection and IV infusion based on age and condition
Administration
- Tablet or capsule should be swallowed whole and taken one hour before a meal
- Oral suspension should be taken with water and administered through a nasogastric or gastric tube if necessary
- IV Injection should be administered intravenously over at least 3 minutes
Interaction
- Metabolized in the liver by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4
- No clinically relevant interactions with certain CYP enzymes
- Potential interference with CYP2C19 metabolism
- Minimal interaction with other drugs like phenytoin, warfarin, clarithromycin, and amoxicillin
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the formulation

- Use of antacids alongside Exium
