Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
- Can be used when diet, exercise, and weight loss alone do not have an adequate effect on keeping blood sugar at the correct level
Pharmacology
- Reduces blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Facilitates Ca+2 transport across the cell membranes
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
- Potentially useful hematological properties
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose is 40 to 80 mg daily
- Can be increased up to 320 mg daily in divided doses when needed
- Dose is determined by the doctor depending on blood and urine sugar levels
- Can be taken before a meal
- Modified release preparation
- Recommended daily dose is one to four tablets (maximum 120 mg) in a single intake at breakfast time
- Must be taken with a glass of water at breakfast time
- Swallow whole without chewing or crushing
- Always eat a meal after taking the tablet(s)
Interaction
- Strengthened blood sugar lowering effect when taken with certain medicines
- Weakened blood glucose lowering effect when taken with certain medicines
- May increase the effects of medicines that reduce blood clotting (warfarin)
Contraindications
- Allergic to gliclazide or related medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
- Presence of ketone bodies and sugar in urine
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Taking medicines to treat fungal infections
- Breastfeeding
