Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
- Has hypoglycemic properties
- Facilitates Ca+2 transport
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose is 40 to 80 mg daily
- Dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily
- Usual initial dose for modified release preparation is one to four tablets daily
- Should be taken before meal
- Should be taken with a glass of water at breakfast time
- Should not be chewed or crushed
- Recommended to be taken at the same time each day
- Combination therapy may require dose adjustments
Interaction
- May interact with oral antidiabetics, GLP-1 receptor agonists, insulin, antibiotics, beta-blockers, ACE-inhibitors, miconazole, fluconazole, H2 receptor antagonists, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, phenylbutazone, ibuprofen, corticosteroids, intravenous salbutamol, ritodrine, terbutaline, danazol, fluoroquinolones, warfarin, St John's Wort
- Can be taken with food and non-alcoholic drinks
- Drinking alcohol is not recommended
- May impair concentration and reaction if blood sugar is too low or too high
- Contains lactose
- Consult doctor before starting another medicinal product
- Inform medical staff if admitted to the hospital

- Allergy to gliclazide or sulfonylureas
- Insulin-dependent diabetes
- Ketone bodies and sugar in urine
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Taking medicines for fungal infections
- Breastfeeding
