Indications

  • Reduces blood sugar levels
  • Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults

Pharmacology

  • Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
  • Decreases hepatic glucose output
  • Has hypoglycemic properties
  • Facilitates Ca+2 transport

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual initial dose is 40 to 80 mg daily
  • Dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily
  • Usual initial dose for modified release preparation is one to four tablets daily
  • Should be taken before meal
  • Should be taken with a glass of water at breakfast time
  • Should not be chewed or crushed
  • Recommended to be taken at the same time each day
  • Combination therapy may require dose adjustments

Interaction

  • May interact with oral antidiabetics, GLP-1 receptor agonists, insulin, antibiotics, beta-blockers, ACE-inhibitors, miconazole, fluconazole, H2 receptor antagonists, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, phenylbutazone, ibuprofen, corticosteroids, intravenous salbutamol, ritodrine, terbutaline, danazol, fluoroquinolones, warfarin, St John's Wort
  • Can be taken with food and non-alcoholic drinks
  • Drinking alcohol is not recommended
  • May impair concentration and reaction if blood sugar is too low or too high
  • Contains lactose
  • Consult doctor before starting another medicinal product
  • Inform medical staff if admitted to the hospital

  • Allergy to gliclazide or sulfonylureas
  • Insulin-dependent diabetes
  • Ketone bodies and sugar in urine
