Indications

  • Reduces blood sugar levels
  • Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
  • Aids when diet, exercise, and weight loss alone are inadequate

Pharmacology

  • Second-generation sulfonylurea drug
  • Stimulates release of insulin from pancreatic cells
  • Decreases hepatic glucose output

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual initial dose of 40-80mg daily
  • Dose can be increased up to 320mg daily
  • Should be taken before meal
  • Modified release preparation
  • Recommended daily dose of 120mg in a single intake at breakfast time
  • Dependent on response to treatment

Interaction

  • May interact with other oral antidiabetic medicines
  • May interact with antibiotics, medicines for high blood pressure, fungal infections, ulcers, depression, painkillers
