Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for type II diabetes mellitus
- Use in combination with metformin or insulin
- Potential for hypoglycaemia with insulin combination
- Lowering blood glucose levels
Pharmacology
- Sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells
- Reduces basal hepatic glucose production
- Increases peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin
- Improves glucose uptake
Dosage
- Regulated by desired blood sugar level
- Initial dose of 1mg once daily
- Gradual dose titration based on glucose monitoring
- Dose range of 1-4mg daily
- Single daily dose with substantial breakfast or main meal

- Tablet must be swallowed with sufficient liquid
Interaction
- Potential interactions with various drugs

Contraindications
- Not suitable for insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
- Not for diabetic ketoacidosis or coma
- Hypersensitivity to glimepiride or sulfonylureas
- Severe hepatic or renal dysfunction
- Not for dialysis patients
