Description
Haloperidol is a butyrophenone derivative with antipsychotic properties that effectively manages hyperactivity, agitation, mania, and psychosis. It also possesses antiemetic properties and exhibits hypothermic and anorexiant effects. It may potentiate the action of barbiturates, general anesthetics, and other CNS depressant drugs. The drug is quick-acting with a duration of action of about 12 hours after a single administration.
DosageAdministration
- Tablet - Initial dose for adults: 0.5 mg to 6.0 mg 2 to 3 times daily
- Daily dose up to 100 mg may be necessary in some cases
- Injection (intramuscular or intravenous) for schizophrenia and other psychosis: Initially 2-10 mg, then every 4-8 hours according to response to a total maximum of 18 mg daily
Indications
- Management of nervousness, anxiety states, and associated psychic disorders
- Functional disorders caused by anxiety states
- Symptomatology of mania, dementia, acute and chronic schizophrenia, and alcoholism
Pharmacology
Potentiates the action of barbiturates, general anesthetics, and other CNS depressant drugs
Interaction
- May interfere with the anticoagulant properties of phenindione
- May antagonize the action of epinephrine and other sympathomimetic agents
- Inhibits the metabolization of tricyclic antidepressants
- May impair the antiparkinson effects of levodopa
Contraindications
- Comatose states and CNS depression due to alcohol or other depressant drugs
- Severe depressive states
- Lesions of the basal ganglia
- Parkinson's syndrome
- Sensitivity to haloperidol
- Senile patients with pre-existing Parkinson-like symptoms
