Mode of Action
Ibuprofen has anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, and analgesic activity. It inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme and reduces prostaglandin synthesis, thus relieving pain and stiffness, reducing swelling, and improving joint movement.
Dosage & Administration
- Oral Dosage Form:
- Adults: 400 mg 3 times daily, not to exceed 2400 mg daily
- Children:
- Recommended dosages based on body weight for different age groups
- Not recommended for children weighing less than 5 kg
- For juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: up to 30-40 mg/kg daily
- Topical Gel:
- Adults: Squeeze 4 to 10cm of gel on affected area, massage until absorbed, not to be repeated more frequently than every four hours and no more than four times a day
- Children: Not recommended for children under 12 years
Contraindications
Not recommended for patients with previous hypersensitivity to Ibuprofen, and in patients with severe or active peptic ulceration

Pregnancy & Lactation
Ibuprofen should not be used during pregnancy and for nursing mothers unless the potential benefits to the mothers outweigh the potential risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal hemorrhage or ulcer
- Ocular monitoring required for patients on long-term therapy
- Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus are more likely to develop hypersensitivity
- Prescribed with caution in patients with asthma and history of hypersensitivity to other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents
