Indications
- Treatment of essential hypertension
- Treatment of hypertension in patients with renal function impairment
- Treatment of salt and fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure
Pharmacology
- Diuretic antihypertensive
- Vasodilation effect
- Inhibition of ion passage across membranes
- Reduction in vascular hyperreactivity
- Decrease in total peripheral and arteriolar resistance
Dosage & Administration
- One tablet daily in the morning
- Can be combined with other categories of anti-hypertensive agent
- Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients
Interaction
- Addition or potentiation of action with other antihypertensive drugs
- Decrease in arterial responsiveness to norepinephrine
- Decrease in lithium renal clearance
- High risk of lithium toxicity when given concomitantly with diuretics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
- Severe renal failure
- Hepatic encephalopathy or severe hepatic failure
- Hypokalaemia

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in pregnant women
- Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitoring of potassium and uric acid serum levels recommended
- Close monitoring for patients with a history of allergy to sulfonamide derivatives
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms including allergies, skin rashes, epigastric pain, nausea, photosensitivity, dizziness, weakness and paraesthesia
- Supportive and symptomatic treatment
- Correction of electrolyte abnormalities
