Description
- Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic and antipyretic properties. It is indicated for symptomatic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative joint diseases, musculoskeletal and joint disorders such as tendinitis and sprain, as well as pain regardless of the origin, such as dental pain, headache, and primary dysmenorrhea.
Dosage
- Starting dose: 150 to 300 mg/day in 3 divided doses
- Maintenance dosage: usually 100 to 200 mg/day
- Maximum daily dose: 300 mg
- Pain and dysmenorrhea management: 25 to 50 mg every 6 to 8 hours, total daily dose should not exceed 300 mg
Administration
- Oral forms should be taken with fluids, preferably with food
Interaction
- Not recommended to be used with other NSAIDs and high dose salicylates
- Increased risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulants like Heparin and Vitamin K antagonists
- Increased risk of elevation of lithium plasma levels when used with lithium
- Increased risk of haematologic toxicity of methotrexate at doses greater than 15mg/week
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity reactions to ketoprofen, ASA or other NSAIDs
- Severe heart failure
- Active or history of peptic ulcer/hemorrhage
- Severe hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Third trimester of pregnancy
Side Effects
- Rare: haemorrhagic anaemia, vision blurred, tinnitus
- Uncommon: headache, dizziness, somnolence, rash, pruritis
- Common: dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid use during first and second trimester, contraindicated in the third trimester and not recommended in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, heart failure, cirrhosis, nephrosis
- Careful monitoring of renal function and transaminase levels
- Discontinue if visual disturbances occur
- NSAIDs may impair female fertility and not recommended in women attempting to conceive
Use in Special Populations
- Elderly: reduce initial dosage and maintain on minimal effective dose
- Hepatic impairment: carefully monitor at minimal effective daily dosage
- Renal impairment: reduce initial dosage and maintain on minimal effective dose
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms observed include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain. No specific antidotes, management includes supportive treatment and monitoring.
