Dosage & Administration

  • Initiate therapy with a dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg three times daily

  • Occasional patients with panic disorder may need up to 10 mg a day
  • Individualized dosage for maximum beneficial effect
  • Lower dose if side effects occur
  • Gradual dosage reduction when discontinuing therapy

Pharmacology

  • Alprazolam is a triazole analog of the 1,4-benzodiazepine class with anxiolytic, hypnotic, and anticonvulsive properties
  • Interacts with GABA-benzodiazepine receptor complex, producing dose-related CNS depressant activity

  • Treatment of anxiety disorder

  • Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia

Interaction

  • Potential aggravation of CNS-depressant action when used concomitantly with other psychotropic drugs, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, alcohol, and oral contraceptives
