Description
- Short-term relief of anxiety
- Treatment for panic disorder

- Initiation dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg three times daily
- Maximum dose not to exceed 4 mg/day

- Potential side effects include drowsiness, light-headedness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation
- Pregnancy category D – avoid in pregnancy and lactation
- Caution in patients with hepatic or renal disease, chronic pulmonary insufficiency, or sleep apnea

Dosage & Administration
- Initiate therapy with a dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg three times daily
- Dose may be increased at intervals of 3 to 4 days in increments of no more than 1 mg/day
- Maximum dose should not exceed 4 mg/day
- Occasional patients with panic disorder may need up to 10 mg a day
- Individualized dosage for maximum beneficial effect
- Lower dose if side effects occur
- Gradual dosage reduction when discontinuing therapy
Pharmacology
- Alprazolam is a triazole analog of the 1,4-benzodiazepine class with anxiolytic, hypnotic, and anticonvulsive properties
- Interacts with GABA-benzodiazepine receptor complex, producing dose-related CNS depressant activity
Indications
- Treatment of anxiety disorder
- Short-term relief of anxiety
- Anxiety associated with depression
- Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia
Interaction
- Potential aggravation of CNS-depressant action when used concomitantly with other psychotropic drugs, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, alcohol, and oral contraceptives
Side Effects
- Frequent side effects may include drowsiness and light-headedness
- Other potential side effects may include depression, headache, confusion, dry mouth, and constipation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category D – avoid in pregnancy
- Assumed excretion in breast milk – nursing should be avoided
Precautions & Warnings
- May produce psychological and physical dependence
- Caution in hepatic or renal disease, chronic pulmonary insufficiency, or sleep apnea

Overdose Effects
