Indications

  • Management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
  • Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Decrease in eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis
  • Peripherally acting analgesic
  • Highly protein bound and largely metabolized in the liver

Pharmacology

  • Inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzyme system
  • Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended tablet dose of 10 mg every 4-6 hours
  • Short-term use only (up to 7 days)
  • Injection for management of moderately severe acute pain
  • Duration of analgesic effect usually 4 to 6 hours
  • Eye drops administration: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Increased side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
  • Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
  • Reduction in anti-hypertensive effect with beta blockers
  • Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE inhibitors
  • Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the drug or other NSAIDs
  • Use in children under 16 years of age
  • Prophylactic analgesic use before surgery

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients over the age of 65 years
  • Caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, and liver dysfunction
  • Discontinue use in patients with evidence of corneal epithelial breakdown
  • No administration while wearing contact lenses
