Indications
- Management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
- Decrease in eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis
- Peripherally acting analgesic
- Highly protein bound and largely metabolized in the liver
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzyme system
- Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended tablet dose of 10 mg every 4-6 hours
- Short-term use only (up to 7 days)
- Injection for management of moderately severe acute pain
- Duration of analgesic effect usually 4 to 6 hours
- Eye drops administration: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily
Interaction
- Increased side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
- Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
- Reduction in anti-hypertensive effect with beta blockers
- Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE inhibitors
- Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or other NSAIDs
- Use in children under 16 years of age
- Prophylactic analgesic use before surgery

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients over the age of 65 years
- Caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, and liver dysfunction
- Discontinue use in patients with evidence of corneal epithelial breakdown
- No administration while wearing contact lenses
