Indications

  • Management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
  • Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Decreasing eye inflammation or redness caused by allergies

Description

  • Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Chemical composition as 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid
  • Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins and acts as a peripherally acting analgesic
  • Metabolized in the liver and excreted in urine

Pharmacology

  • Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system and prostaglandin synthesis
  • Demonstrates minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet recommended dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use
  • Injection recommended dose varies by age and condition, with maximum effect in 1 to 2 hours after dosing
  • Eye Drops dose: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily for adults

Interaction

  • Increased side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
  • Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
  • Reduced anti-hypertensive effect with Beta Blocker
  • Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE Inhibitors
  • Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Not for use in children under 16 years of age
  • Not to be used as prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients over 65 years of age
  • Caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, and liver dysfunction
  • Eye Drops not to be administered while wearing contact lenses
