Indications
- Management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
- Decrease eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- Drug of pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Chemically known as 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid
- Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
- Biological activity associated with the S-form
- Highly protein bound and largely metabolized in the liver
- Products of metabolism and some unchanged drugs are excreted in the urine
Pharmacology
- Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system and hence inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
- Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at its analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended tablet dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use (up to 7 days)
- Recommended injection dose: varies based on age, body weight, and condition
Interaction
- Other NSAIDs or aspirin: Increases the side effects
- Anti-coagulants: Enhances anti-coagulant effect
- Beta Blocker: Reduces the anti-hypertensive effect
- ACE Inhibitors: Increases the risk of renal impairment
- Methotrexate: Enhances the toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- Children under 16 years of age
- Prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients over the age of 65 years
- Caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, and liver dysfunction
- Discontinue use of topical NSAIDs in patients with corneal epithelial breakdown, monitor closely for corneal health, and do not administer while wearing contact lenses
