Indications
- Short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
- Decreasing eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- Pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Chemical composition known as 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid, compound with 2 - amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (1:1)
- Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
- Linear pharmacokinetic property
- Highly protein bound and largely metabolized in the liver
- Metabolites and some unchanged drugs excreted in the urine
Pharmacology
- Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system and prostaglandin synthesis
- Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet recommended dose of 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use only (up to 7 days)
- Injection may be used for management of moderately severe, acute pain, with specific doses for different patient groups and duration of analgesic effect
- Eye Drops administration of 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily for adults
Interaction
- NSAIDs or aspirin increase side effects of Rotek
- Anti-coagulants enhance anti-coagulant effect
- Beta Blockers reduce anti-hypertensive effect
- ACE Inhibitors increase risk of renal impairment
- Methotrexate enhances toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- Not for use in children under 16 years of age
- Contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients over the age of 65 years
- Caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, and liver dysfunction
- Eye Drops caution for patients with evidence of corneal epithelial breakdown and those wearing contact lenses
