Indications
- Management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
- Treatment of eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Chemical name: 5-benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid
- Biological activity associated with S-form
- Highly protein bound
- Metabolized in the liver
- Metabolites and some unchanged drugs excreted in urine
Pharmacology
- Potent analgesic
- Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme system
- Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet recommended dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours for up to 7 days
- Injection for postoperative pain management: IV or IM administration
- Eye Drops: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily
- Different doses for adults vs. patients under 16 years of age
- Max daily doses for different age groups
Interactions
- Enhanced side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
- Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
- Reduced anti-hypertensive effect with beta blockers
- Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE Inhibitors
- Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or other NSAIDs
- Use not recommended in children under 16 years of age
- Contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery
