Description
- A hyperosmolar laxative used for the effective treatment of constipation.
Indications
- Treatment of chronic constipation
- Intestinal flora disturbances
- Increased blood ammonia levels
Pharmacology
- Metabolized in the colon by saccharolytic bacteria
- Produces low molecular weight organic acids
- Lowers pH of colon contents
- Promotes retention of water by an osmotic effect
- Increases peristaltic activity
- Minimally absorbed
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 3-6 teaspoons daily initially, 1½-6 teaspoons daily in long-term therapy
- Children dosage: 3 teaspoons daily initially, 1-2 teaspoons daily in long-term therapy
- Infants and toddlers dosage: 1-2 teaspoons daily initially, 1 teaspoon daily in long-term therapy
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions with Lactoben
- Potassium deficiency may intensify glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to galactose or lactose
- Galactose-free diet
- Gastro-cardial symptom complex
- Suspected intestinal obstruction
Side Effects
- Flatulence
- Cramp
- Abdominal discomfort
- Diarrhoea in overdose
- Loss of electrolytes, primarily potassium in abuse

- No adverse effects observed
- Use during pregnancy and lactation to be determined by a registered physician
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with care to patients intolerant to Lactoben
- Higher dose may be required for (pre) coma hepaticum in diabetics
