Description

Mebolos is a hyperosmolar laxative used to treat constipation by promoting soft stool and accelerating bowel motion.

Pharmacology

Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide metabolized in the colon, producing low molecular weight organic acids, lowering pH of colon contents, and increasing peristaltic activity.

Dosage & Administration

  • Constipation:
    • Adults:
      • Initial: 3-6 teaspoons daily
      • Long-term: 1½-6 teaspoons daily
    • Children up to 14 years:
      • Initial: 3 teaspoons daily
      • Long-term: 1-2 teaspoons daily
    • Infants and toddlers:
      • Initial: 1-2 teaspoons daily
      • Long-term: 1 teaspoon daily
  • Damaged intestinal flora:
    • Adults: 1-2 teaspoons daily
    • Children: 1 teaspoon daily
  • Reduction of blood ammonia level:
    • Hyper-ammoniemia in hepatopathy: 18-30 teaspoons daily
    • In portal systemic encephalopathy: Hourly doses of 6-9 teaspoons; adjust after achieving laxation

Interaction

No significant drug interactions with Mebolos, but the glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides can be intensified by potassium deficiency in abuse.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to galactose and/or lactose
  • Galactose-free diet
  • Gastro-cardial symptom complex
  • Suspected intestinal obstruction

Side Effects

  • Flatulence
  • Cramp
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Diarrhoea in overdose
  • Loss of electrolytes, primarily potassium in abuse

  • Adverse effects: Studies show no adverse effects, decision by registered physician

Precautions & Warnings

Administer with care to patients intolerant to Mebolos; consider higher doses for (pre)coma hepaticum in diabetics.

Overdose Effects

Expect diarrhoea and abdominal cramps in acute overdosage; no reported accidental overdosage.
