Indications

Description
Onlac is a hyperosmolar laxative used for effective treatment of constipation by drawing water into the bowel, causing distention and promoting soft stool and bowel motion acceleration.
Pharmacology
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide metabolized in the colon to produce low molecular weight organic acids, lower the colon pH, retain water by osmotic effect, and increase peristaltic activity.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 3-6 teaspoons daily, long-term therapy 1½-6 teaspoons daily
- Children up to 14 years: 3 teaspoons daily, long-term therapy 1-2 teaspoons daily
- Infants and toddlers: 1-2 teaspoons daily, long-term therapy 1 teaspoon daily
- For damaged intestinal flora: Adults 1-2 teaspoons daily, Children 1 teaspoon daily
- Hyper-ammoniemia in hepatopathy: maximum of 18-30 teaspoons daily
- Portal systemic encephalopathy: hourly doses of 6-9 teaspoons of Lactulose solution
Interaction
No significant drug interactions with Onlac. The glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides can be intensified by potassium deficiency in abuse.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to galactose and lactose
- Galactose-free diet
- Gastro-cardial symptom complex
- Suspected intestinal obstruction
Side Effects
- Occasional flatulence, cramp, and abdominal discomfort
- Overdose can result in diarrhea
- Loss of electrolytes, primarily potassium in abuse
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA Pregnancy Category of Lactulose is B with no adverse effects. Decisions regarding use during pregnancy and lactation must be made by a registered physician.
Precautions & Warnings
Onlac should be administered with care to patients intolerant to Onlac. The dose used in the treatment of (pre) coma hepaticum is usually much higher and may need to be taken into consideration for diabetics.
Overdose Effects
No reports of accidental overdosage. Diarrhea and abdominal cramps expected in the event of acute overdosage.
