Indications
- Monotherapy for partial-onset seizures in adults
- Adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults, adolescents, children, and infants
- Treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents
- Treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and adolescents
Description
- Mechanism of action not fully understood
- Minimal activity in submaximal stimulation
- Protection against secondarily generalized activity
- Inhibition of burst firing without affecting normal neuronal excitability
Dosage
- Initial dose for adults and adolescents from 16 years of age is 250 mg twice daily
- Maximum dose is 1500 mg twice daily
- Special oral solution formulation for infants and children under 6 years
- Dose adjustment for renal impairment
Administration
- Film-coated tablets for oral administration
- To be taken with or without food
- Daily dose administered in two equally divided doses
Interaction
- No significant influence on serum concentrations of existing antiepileptic drugs
- Potential interaction with probenecid, methotrexate, and laxatives
- Absorption not altered by food
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to active substance or related derivatives
Side Effects
- Common adverse reactions include somnolence, asthenia, and infection in adults
- Fatigue, aggression, and decreased appetite in pediatric patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Excreted in human breast milk

- Rare cases of decreased blood cell counts
