Indications
- Treatment of Parkinson's disease and syndrome
- Relieves rigidity and bradykinesia
- Manages tremor, dysphagia, and postural instability
Description
- Levodopa is the metabolic precursor of dopamine
- Carbidopa is a dopa decarboxylase (DDC) inhibitor
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage initiated with one tablet three or four times a day
- Titration upward may be required in some patients
- Initial dose for 250/25 mg tablet is one half taken once or twice daily
Interaction
- Symptomatic postural hypotension may occur when added to antihypertensive medicines
- Decrease in bioavailability when ingested with ferrous sulphate or ferrous gluconate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Carbidopa and Levodopa
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- History of malignant melanoma
Side Effects
- Dyskinesias including choreiform and other involuntary movements
- Nausea
- Orthostatic effects including hypotensive episodes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Effects on human pregnancy are unknown
- Hazardous effects on fetal development in rabbits
- Unknown excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not recommended for medicine-induced extrapyramidal reactions
- Dosage reduction may be required for dyskinesias
- Cautious administration to patients with severe cardiovascular or pulmonary disease
Use in Special Populations
- Use in children below the age of 18 years is not recommended
